Southampton City Art Gallery
The gallery is internationally renowned for its permanent collection, spanning eight centuries, which tell the story of western art from the Renaissance to the present day. The core of the collection is twentieth century and contemporary British art.
The gallery, based in Southampton’s burgeoning Cultural Quarter, opened in 1939. The gallery attracts art-lovers, curious amateurs as well as those who simply enjoy the atmosphere of a gallery. Southampton City Art Gallery offers the opportunity to enjoy high quality exhibitions ranging from painting, sculpture and drawing, to photography and film, as well as permanent collection and displays that change regularly to ensure new experiences with each visit.
Free to enter and conveniently located right next to SeaCity Museum, the venue caters for families. You can enjoy gallery trails through the exhibitions, monthly art clubs and a fantastic range of activities for all ages.
The gallery offers high quality exhibitions ranging from painting, sculpture and drawing, to photography and film, as well as displays that change regularly to ensure new experiences with each visit.
Opening Times
Monday – Friday 10am – 3pm (Last entry 2.45pm), Saturday 10am – 5pm (Last entry 4.45pm). Closed Sundays
Disabled Access
Wheelchair access is available from the street to the ground floor gallery foyer, which leads to a lift to the exhibition space on the first floor. Access can also be arranged for mobility scooters, please call the gallery in advance for more information on 023 8083 4536. Photography
Photography in the galleries is allowed for personal, non-commercial purposes only. It is the visitor’s responsibility to ensure no copyright is infringed. The use of flash and tripods is prohibited. Some exhibitions may have copyright restrictions and we will inform you if photography is not permitted.
Baggage Policy
For reasons of security and safety, Southampton City Art Gallery has a maximum bag size policy in place.
Luggage with wheels &/or larger than 56x40x21cm will not be admitted and need to be stored elsewhere before entering the gallery.
Sea City Museum, Havelock Rd has lockers for items 40x80cm maximum.
Please do not leave bags unattended at any time. The Gallery reserves the right to vary or alter these conditions without prior notice.
