Premier League matches beamed into booths at Southampton bar Grumpy Monkey

FOR Saints fans missing their matchday fix, the next best thing is just across the park from St Mary’s.

Grumpy Monkey, the popular bar and lounge in Guildhall Square, shows Premier League matches and all manner of other sporting occasions on your own TV in booths perfect for six.

The spacious venue is the perfect spot for 2020 drinking with a capacity of 150 even during Covid times, high ceilings and private booths with a TV for your own bubble as well as a number of other HD screens dotted around.

The vibrant bar, which opened in April 2019, enjoys 2 for 1 cocktails from 5pm until close on weekdays, DJ sets and live music, as well as an upstairs lounge and bar area.

There are a choice of 30 gins stocked behind the bar, San Miguel is the most popular lager and the speciality grumpy burgers go down a storm alongside a selection of other comfort food and pub grub favourites.

General manager James Craig Lewington, who previously managed Tapas Barcelona on the same site and spearheaded the opening of Grumpy Monkey, told the Daily Echo about reopening after nearly six months of forced coronavirus closure.

He said: “I’m not going to lie, it’s been testing. We’ve had to adapt, but we’re glad to be back and the feedback has been really positive from our clientele.

“We like to think we provide a bit of an escape. People are saying we’ve been able to recreate the same atmosphere and vibe they’ve been used to. The reality is easy to see outside, but our customers can chill out, enjoy good cocktails, relax in front of the telly or listen to the DJ and it’s a bit of a getaway for them. All we want is to give them a good time.”

Part of the family run local Delicious Dining group, which also includes the likes of Grand Cafe, Ennios and Banana Wharf, Grumpy Monkey will soon reveal plans for expansion and a new VIP bar.
