Jane Austen Walk Around Southampton

Discover Jane Austen’s Southampton

Explore Southampton through the eyes of one of England’s greatest writers. Jane Austen lived in Southampton from 1806 to 1809, and while the city has evolved since her time, many historic streets, buildings, and waterfront views still reflect the world she once knew.

Jane Austen’s Footsteps

The Jane Austen Walk is a gentle, atmospheric journey through the Old Town and surrounding historic areas, connecting you with key locations linked to Austen’s life, her family, and the Regency-era society that surrounded her.

This walk is perfect for literature lovers, history enthusiasts, and visitors seeking a cultural, scenic way to explore the city.

Highlights of the Jane Austen Walk

1. Castle Square – The Austen Residence
Begin your walk at Castle Square, the former site of the Austen family home. Jane lived here with her mother, sister Cassandra, and brother Frank. Although the house no longer stands, this area offers views over the old waterfront she would have known well.

2. The Old Town Walls
Southampton’s medieval walls would have been a familiar sight for Austen. Stroll along the ancient stone pathways, enjoying views across the city and coastline. This is one of the most atmospheric parts of the walk.

3. The Dolphin Hotel
A historic coaching inn frequented by Regency society. Jane Austen is believed to have attended social gatherings here, and the building still retains much of its original character.

4. St. Michael’s Church
Dating back to the 11th century, St. Michael’s is the oldest building still in use in the city. The Austen family lived just a short walk from here, making it a likely stop on many of Jane’s daily routines.

5. Bugle Street & Town Quay
Wander down Bugle Street toward the waterfront. This area still captures some of the charm and layout it held during Austen’s residency. At Town Quay you can enjoy sweeping harbour views reminiscent of the seaside scenery Jane often described in her letters.
